Ecuador is a country in South America bordered by Peru and Columbia. The country’s diverse landscape includes the Amazon rainforest, Andean highlands and the Galapagos Islands, with wildlife just as diverse as its landscapes. You can experience anything from indigenous markets, to colonial towns to coastal beaches. There is truly something for everybody in this country. Ecuador has a population of 17.6 million people. Ischemic heart disease continues to be the #1 cause of death in Ecuador, with chronic kidney disease and stroke following. However, when looking at the reasons of death and disability combined in Ecuador, interpersonal violence and diabetes are the top two causes. These important factors impact and influence the work our foundation does when volunteering.

In our opinion, the best volunteer experience is one in which you are immersed in the culture and able to see exactly how people live in the part of the world that you visit. This cultural exchange helps our volunteers work abroad and understand how the smallest projects can have the greatest effect. Our Hands For Humanity volunteers interact with the community of Portoviejo, Ecuador in many ways. Each trip is a partnership between the local community and its leaders, whether we are holding a health fair, teaching CPR or working at the orphanage, Hogar de Belén.
